The M4A4 Howl holds a unique position in CS:GO history as the only weapon skin to achieve "Contraband" status. Valve's Response

Faced with a legitimate copyright claim, Valve took unprecedented action. Rather than simply removing the skin from the game - which would have caused chaos for existing owners - they created an entirely new rarity tier: "Contraband." All existing Howl skins were reclassified with this special status, and the original artwork was replaced with a new design featuring different wolf imagery to avoid further copyright issues.

Market Impact

The contraband designation had an immediate and dramatic effect on the Howl's market value. Since no new Howl skins could be obtained from cases, the existing supply became finite. The Howling Dawn sticker, which was also part of the same controversy, was similarly removed from cases and given contraband status. This sticker, featuring the same wolf design as the original Howl, has become incredibly valuable in its own right, often selling for thousands of dollars and adding significant premium when applied to weapons.

From an investment standpoint, the Howl represents a unique case study in artificial scarcity within gaming economies.
